Weather and Climate in Gdańsk
Gdańsk sits on Poland's northern coast along the Baltic Sea, enjoying a pleasantly temperate climate. The region features cool winters and warm summers, with rainfall spread pretty evenly throughout the year. Summer brings plenty of sunshine, though you'll rarely see completely cloudless skies. Come winter, clouds take over and the sun plays hide-and-seek, popping out only when it feels like it.
Monthly average temperatures swing from January's frosty readings to July's perfect t-shirt weather. Winters are cool and summers warm, but never unbearably hot. The coldest months are January and February, when temperatures can dip a few degrees below freezing. The warmest stretch comes in July and August, when the sun really shows off and daytime temperatures climb comfortably above 20°C (68°F).
Gdańsk stays fairly humid year-round. Rain shows up regularly in every season, keeping humidity levels high. While showers usually don't last long, it's smart to pack an umbrella and waterproof shoes for your trip.
Winter days in Gdańsk typically hover a few degrees above freezing, with truly cold spells being pretty rare. Snowy, frosty days have become increasingly uncommon, and what locals call "Polish winter", that classic slush and sleet combo, is the norm from November through March.
Best Times to Visit
While Gdańsk is a great destination year-round, the real tourist season kicks off at Easter. That's when you'll start seeing more visitors around town, and during summer, weekends and holidays get particularly busy. Just be prepared for bigger crowds and busier services during these peak times.
The sweet spots for visiting are the summer season from April through October, plus the weeks leading up to Christmas. Spring, which arrives in early April, is perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing.
If you're dreaming of combining city exploration with beach time in nearby Sopot, plan your trip between June and September. The beach scene really heats up from mid-July to mid-August. Gdańsk gets busier then too, so book your accommodation well in advance. Come September, the beaches calm down, but it's still a fantastic time for a city break.
October and November see fewer tourists, which means better deals on accommodation. Just keep in mind that November days get pretty short and gloomy. Visitors start returning in early December, drawn by the magical Christmas markets. For shopping enthusiasts, Gdańsk works any time of year, the city's packed with shopping centers and indoor spaces where you can browse regardless of the weather.
